Best Biscuits

These whole grain biscuits are surpriseingly light and fluffy and couldn't be easier to make. They are great topped with butter and honey, jam or good sausage gravy.

And they also make extraordinary breakfast sandwiches with avocado, fried egg, and bacon (or sausage).

Instructions

Step 0. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit

Step 1. Mix dry ingredients

Mix together the flour, salt, baking powder and optional sweetener.

Step 2. Cut in the butter

Cut in the cold butter using a fork or pastry cutter only until the bits of butter are slightly smaller than a pea.

Step 3. Add the water

Add the cold water slowly until it just combines into a dough. You may not need it all.

Step 4. Roll out dough

Pat out the dough on a floured surface until it is 1 inch thick. Cut biscuits with a wide mouth jar lid or circular cookie cutter. Place them on a baking tray 1 1/2 inches apart.

Step 5. Bake

Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom and just browning on the top.

Serve warm with butter and jam or topped with good gravy.
